Wiley X Saber Advanced - top quality glasses
2016-12-29
Wiley X brand is probably well-known by every Tactical Redneck. Present in the market for years, offering wide range of ballistic goggles and glasses as well as some interesting gloves. As it happened, one of their products has caught my attention about 2,5 years ago when I was looking for some new airsoft glasses… And it is still with me, for good and bad. I’m talking about Wiley X Saber Advanced. Can’t say they are something new, they were released a couple of years ago, but they still remain my favorite model. Saber glasses, successor to the cult PT-1 model, are universal, comfortable and modular – that is why I use them frequently not only for airsoft but for all kinds of outdoor activities, EDC or in the shooting range. So let’s consider all above-mentioned characteristics:
Modularity
Wiley X Saber are featured by very interesting design. They are part of “Changeable” line which means we can change lenses according to our needs and current situation. We can buy basic version and then just get ourselves additional set of different lenses. There are many kinds of lenses: classic Smoke Grey, transparent, Light Rust, Vermillion and yellow.
It is worth to notice that they are not classic glasses – made of frames and lenses only. The basic part of Saber are lenses with foam (kind of comfort pad). All other parts are mounted on the lenses and we don’t need any tools to attach them. Of course, there is always a risk of breaking something, but such thing never happened to me or any other users of Saber glasses that I know.
About the temples – unfortunately we cannot regulate their angle or length. We just have to put the Saber on and see if they are ok. I know that some people (especially airsofters) complain about the space between the face and lower part of lenses, but I don’t think that’s much of a problem. What is interesting – along with our glasses we get additional strap and temples that allow us to transform our glasses to “pseudo-goggles” in like 3 seconds. It is useful especially during the winter season when I have my cap on. Such solution isn’t as good for airsoft – those were the only moments when my glasses moistened. Otherwise – no such problems, even in the most humid conditions. It can be a result of special Selenite™ layer used by the manufacturer.
Another “space technology” used to strengthen the lenses is T-Shell™ layer protecting it from any scratches. I can’t really say a bad word about it – I dropped them on concrete, carried them in my backpack without any protection, they even survived direct shots with 6mm airsoft BB and never suffered any bigger damage, in worst case some tiny scratches. Of course Wiley X Saber have all the certificates, numbers and attests but that’s quite obvious for glasses this class.
The last interesting feature when it comes to design is a rubber nose part called “Take Flight” that can be smoothly regulated and adjusted to the shape of our nose – really awesome! Oh, and one more thing – there is special insert for corrective lenses that can be bought separately – awesome thing when we can’t or don’t want to use glasses or contact lenses.

Komfort
Saber glasses are quite light and really comfortable to wear. Doesn’t really matter if we use baseball cap, winter cap or nothing at all. I mentioned earlier the foam on the top part of glasses. It increases the comfort and absorbs some of the sweat. I need to point out that this is probably the only part of Saber that is subject to wear – it can get disfigured with a time. Saber glasses never fell of my head, even during the most dynamic airsoft or outdoor activities. Sometimes you can ever forget that you wear them, and that is probably the best compliment any glasses can get. Even after long hours they remain very comfortable to use.
Versatility
Here comes the 3rd most important feature of Wiley X Saber. I wanted to have perfect glasses for “tactical” use but it turned out that Saber are completely universal. Very good in the city and for EDC, even as regular sunglasses. Some may say that design is too aggressive but I’m really fond of it. They are perfect for trips outside the town, but during summer and winter. I use them for running and on the shooting range – never failed me in any environment. I usually use Smoke Grey lenses but I also have Ligh Rust ones. As we know there are some situations when increased contrast is really indispensable. The set contains microfiber bag that at the same time serves as cloth.
Słowem podsumowania
To sum it all up – I’ve been using Wiley X Saber Advanced extensively for almost 3 years and despite minor damage (one lost temple, one broken temple, foam on one of lenses is slowly dying) I don’t really want any different glasses. I compared it to some older models from WX Changeable line (PT-1) and “younger brothers” (Vapor) and they are really the best – when it comes to quality of manufacture and comfort, options of configuration and availability of spare parts (which can be quite useful). Top class! I’ve been thinking about ESS ICE glasses that (I think) could stand a chance against Saber, but… Maybe some other time ;)
Pros and Cons:
+ comfortable
+ versatile
+ modular
+ no problem with moisting
+ attractive design
- temples tend to break
- for some - they could fit the lowe part of face much better
- no hard case in the set
