A new dimension of sights - Theta Rugged PRO Red Dot Sight PRDS review
Theta Rugged Red Dot Sights
The right sight can change a lot in our airsoft game. Without an effective aiming method, we are practically deprived of the ability to return effective fire against other players equipped with scopes or collimators. Mechanical sights, although more useful in airsoft than in the world of firearms, only support accurate shots. Of course, there will be people who will say that at the distances we have in airsoft, you don't actually need to aim at all. There are more and more players who give up using any sights at all. However, this is the domain of short-distance games. In forest games, scopes and collimators still dominate.
So, what should you expect from the airsoft scope we choose? Image quality is very important. It largely influences how comfortable we use a given optic. The image must be clear and not distorted. These are very important factors. A well-thought-out design of the reticle is also important. It is worth remembering about solid construction and good quality of assembly. So, let's check how the PRO Red Dot Sight PRDS fares in these fields.
What is included in the THO Rugged kit?
This time I will try to start quite classically, i.e., with a small unboxing. The described product comes to us in a small cardboard box with aesthetic graphics describing its various features. The contents inside were secured with a thick sponge. There you will find the sight itself, with the mount and covers. There will also be tools needed for assembly. The set is complemented by a printed user manual and a cloth.
The collimator makes a very good impression. There's nothing to be surprised about. Its body is made of AL aluminium. 6061-T6 machined on CNC machines. The described model, as well as others from this line, have a classic structure based on various popular designs. There is an inscription "Rugged" on the body, indicating the origin of the sight. Apart from that, we only have markings of the illumination intensity of the aiming point.
There are turrets for adjustment at the top of the collimator and on one of its sides. On the other side there is a knob for adjusting the brightness of the aiming point and a place for a power source. The collimator takes the popular CR 2032 cell batteries. By turning the knob, we can set one of twelve levels. The aiming point is a 1.5 MOA dot. So, it is quite a precise aiming point. I regret that the backlight is only available in red. It would be nice if there was also a green one, but it's not a big problem.
The collimator itself is mounted using the one-piece assembly included in the set. It gives the same impression as the collimator itself. It is solid and made with care. We screw it to the airsoft gun with one large, solid screw. And to the collimator with four smaller ones. We will tighten them all using the Allen key included in the set.

And how can it be, when the collimator in question is made of durable CNC-machined aluminium? Of course, that's not all. But what if I say that it is IPX7 tight? Additionally, it withstands overloads of 800G. For an airsoft collimator, these are quite impressive properties. What's more. The body of the described collimator is oxidized. This makes it less likely to cause accidental scratches or other minor mechanical damage. The lenses, in turn, are covered with an anti-fog layer. They are scratch resistant and nitrogen cleaned.
But what does this mean? How does it compare to the competition? Let's think about it. Typically, typical airsoft sight models do not provide us with such accurate information about the physical properties of the products. It is difficult to find data on the materials or technologies used. It's not a coincidence. It's just usually nothing to brag about. Or the materials do not meet the standards set for particular technologies. It's different here. The manufacturer did not save on the solutions used and does not have to hide anything. This is a nice change, especially in the market of typical airsoft optics.
The described sight, as well as others from the Theta Rugged line, can easily cope with even strong GBBR replicas. This means that they will be more than suitable for typical AEGs. According to the information I received, they are resistant to firearms. Unfortunately, I had no way to test it myself. Nevertheless, the durability of 800G may not allow for shooting with some strong calibres, but it is found in sights typically designed for firearm equivalents of our replicas.
Will Theta Rugged break through?
So far, when considering optics for airsoft guns, we have encountered a difficult situation. On the one hand, the market offered us cheap, typically airsoft products. There's nothing wrong with them. They are priced quite favourably and since we intend to mount them on replicas, they do not have to be super durable. Over time, however, it turned out that replacing the collimator every season was quite burdensome. Additionally, the quality of the optics and adjustment options also leave a lot to be desired.
On the other hand, we can choose from collimators or scopes designed with firearms in mind. The fact is that their prices are falling. We can find them priced sometimes very favourably. However, they still require considerable investment. It's different here. Theta Rugged sights are only slightly more expensive than popular designs dedicated only to airsoft.
Although in this article I focus only on the PRO Red Dot Sight PRDS sight, it is worth noting that it is only part of the entire new Theta Optics brand line. Next to it, you will also find other collimators, and who knows, maybe this offer will expand over time. What is worth mentioning is the fact that all of them are built using similar quality materials and with equal attention to detail. Experienced players or simply people who are looking for a good, solid airsoft scope but do not want to overpay should be satisfied.
