Vietnam War – weaponry

The weaponry used during the Vietnam War reflected the technological gap between both sides of the conflict. American soldiers had advanced weapons, while Vietnamese guerrillas relied on simpler models - some of which are now popular airsoft guns.

The M16 rifles became synonymous with American involvement in Vietnam. Lightweight, efficient, and equipped with a fixed, non-adjustable stock, they were perfect for jungle warfare. Despite the introduction of the M16, some soldiers preferred the older model - the M14. It was a semi-automatic rifle that provided greater firepower and could also serve as a sniper rifle. The primary infantry support weapon of the US Army was the M60 machine gun - offering significant firepower and stability. Known for its reliability and stopping power, the M1911 pistol was used by American soldiers as a sidearm.

Meanwhile, the AK47 rifle became an icon of Vietnamese guerrilla warfare. It was valued for its reliability in harsh and contaminated conditions, simplicity of design, and ease of use and maintenance. Viet Cong forces also utilized the SKS semi-automatic carbine, the TT-33 pistol, and the Chinese version of the AK-47 rifle - the Chicom Type 56.
