Medium magnification optics – what’s available on the market?

From my other article you probably already know the pros and cons of both red dot sight and the optics with magnification. I assume that if you’re reading this particular entry, you have already made the choice. Today we’ll talk about the most popular medium-range optics solutions on the current airsoft market.

ACOG replicas

Some time ago, it was the ACOG was the most popular magnification sight in the military, movies, games, and (guess where) in the airsoft world. Currently there are a lot ACOG knockoffs available on the market (check AIM-O offer) all of them came from that one beautiful country, where people eat a lot of rice. The cheapest products, which are also the most popular (what a coincidence) have that stylish and cool look, thanks to the black matt coating and the markings from their protoplast.

Unfortunately, these are all the positives that I can say about them. The first impression is gone with the wind at the moment of trying to aim with that thing. You know all that memes and funny videos where game characters from Battlefield series ridiculously long neck when looking trough the scope? That’s exactly how you will look like when using the cheap airsoft ACOG copy. Your eyes have to be incredibly close to the lenses in order to catch the view of the scope and see the target clearly.

Of course, if someone is constipated enough – that gizmo is usable. However, this kind of optics is pretty exhausting in use and takes a lot of time to practice and use it as an advantage on the field.

Elcan Specter DR replicas with fixed magnification

This one is my personal favorite. During my airsoft carrier, the fixed magnification Specter DR was the only kind of scope that fulfilled most my personal needs. It was easy to “catch” the clear picture trough the scope without making any alignments of my neck. Long story short – it was working properly. Of course it’s not a flawless piece of gear.

The first doubts appear when it comes to the magnification – the legends say that it’s the 4x, but it’s just fairy tale. It is close to the 3-3,5x, I would say. The other disadvantage is the lack of illumination of the crosshair. The 4 levels of brightness both in green and red color aren’t noticeable until the midnight. Happily, the usage of the illumination is not mandatory.

However, If you’re not a tall and strong special forces airsoft operator, the weight of this optic can also be a noticeable flaw. What’s interesting, in the opposite to the ACOG’s, Specter copies are being adjusted not by the crosshair itself, but by adjusting the whole optic horizontally and vertically. Thanks to the lenses diameter, Elcan provides a wide field of view, and as I said before – it is very cooperative with the users eye.

Elcan Specter DR 1-4x replica

Unfortunately, there is nothing good to say about this kind of optic. It’s an evil twin of the fixed magnification Specter. The 1-4x regulation is just a big cock-and-bull story, and the view trough optic is terrible. It’s totally not worth it, unless you really feel that strange urge to have the similar mechanism to the original piece of gear, but without any functionality.

The 1-4x scope replicas

This is a kind of fresh thing on the airsoft market. At first, this was an object that was associated with the IPSC shooters and then the military operators have also appreciated it. What happened next, you probably already know ;). Currently on our polish market the only available models are the ACMs with a full mil-dot crosshair and a one-piece RIS mount with the additional external rails for things like the docter red dot, flashlight or the laser pointer. These optics usually have the fluent adjustment from the 1,5x magnification to the 5x. They perform properly and the view is clear and wide.

However, going on the famous Western auction site that starts with an “A” and rhymes with coffee express, have a few more models to offer. The main difference from ACMs on our market is that they use a different reticle type, which is a circle with a dot inside. This is very comfortable when using the scope as a short-range optic – quite similar to the red dot. With a simple rotation of the ring you can change it into a proper x4 scope. One of the popular and recommended products is the Visionking short-dot, which is also considered as a budget firearm scope.
